Market sizing

Top-down and bottom-up, segmenting, and sense-checking — with Saudi numbers.

A market-sizing question asks for a rough number you don't know in advance, such as “How many cups of coffee are sold in Riyadh each day?”. The method matters more than precision.

Two approaches

  • Top-down: start from the population, then narrow (who drinks coffee, how often).
  • Bottom-up: start from one unit (a café), then multiply by how many there are.

Key takeaways

  • Method over precision.
  • Pick top-down or bottom-up, and say why.
  • Sense-check the number at the end.

Check your understanding

Three quick questions; nothing is saved.

  1. 1.What matters most in market sizing?
  2. 2.Starting from the number of cafés and multiplying is…
  3. 3.Why round the numbers?
